Mitcham Zoo, located in South London, is a family-run animal rescue and rehoming centre that specialises in exotic animals. Their mission is to provide homes for unwanted, sick, or injured reptiles, ensuring they live out their lives in a safe and loving environment.
Community Engagement
Mitcham Zoo loves sharing their passion for animals with family, friends, neighbours, and the local community. Their Animal Encounters & Handling experiences are a great way to connect with schools, community groups like Scouts, public events, private parties, and even film/TV productions.
Special Guests at Mitcham Zoo
During PeddyMark’s visit, we had the pleasure of meeting a diverse array of animals, including meerkats, tortoises, genets, a kinkajou, an armadillo, snakes, bearded dragons, sugar gliders, and more. Each of these amazing creatures is a rescue with its own unique story to tell, and they have all found a safe haven here at Mitcham Zoo.
Gareth has ensured that these animals have received the care and love they need, allowing them to live out their lives in a supportive and nurturing environment.
Importance of Microchipping
Did you know that only a vet can microchip reptiles? Gareth is a huge advocate for microchipping, which helps ensure that each keeper has as much information as possible about their reptiles and that the animals are identifiable at all times.

The National Centre for Reptile Welfare
The National Centre for Reptile Welfare (NCRW) plays a vital role in the world of reptile care and education. This esteemed institution not only provides educational and research facilities but also offers a rehoming service for animals whose keepers can no longer care for them. Reptiles, such as tortoises and some snakes, are incredibly long-lived pets, with tortoises reaching over 100 years and some snakes living up to 40 years. Inevitably, some pets outlive their keepers and require rehoming.
The NCRW ensures these animals are given a second chance at a fulfilling life by finding them new, suitable homes. Their efforts align perfectly with Mitcham Zoo's mission of providing a safe and loving environment for exotic animals. Collaborations like these help ensure that all reptiles, regardless of their circumstances, receive the care and attention they deserve.
